The Middle Yough is a great river for beginning rafters and kayakers. It is also great for families with small children. A class one and two river, located in Ohiopyle Pennsylvania, over 75,000 people go down the Middle Yough every year. Only an hour drive south-east of Pittsburgh, Ohiopyle is an excellent family get-a-way.
The MIddle Yough has over 10 minor rapids, most of them a nice and easy class one with a few class two thrown in for alittle excitment. It is challenging enough to not bore a veteran rafter, however it isn't hard enough to over-intimidate a first time rafter.
When rafting the MIddle Yough, you have a few options. There are four outfitters in the town of Ohiopyle, all of which would be happy to place you a guided tour of the MIddle Yough. If you have not been rafting before, this is your best option. Another option to consider is renting your equipment and running the trip yourself. Ulike the Lower Yough where previous rafting experience is highly recommended before heading out on your own, the Middle Yough is a very easy and gentle river that can easily be done by novice rafters. The Middle Yough is not without its dangers so please be responsible and use your best judgement. When you do rent equipment as opposed to going on a guided tour the outfitter you choose will take you to the town of Confluence which is where the Middle Yough starts. From there you will work your way down the Middle Yough in your raft back to the town of Ohiopyle. Also keep in mind, when you are renting equipment you will not have a guide with you. This means you are responsible for your own safety.
