The Lower Yough is a great river for beginning and experienced rafters alike. A class three and four river, located in Ohiopyle Pennsylvania, over 200,000 people go down the Lower Yough every year. Only an hour drive south-east of Pittsburgh, Ohiopyle is an excellent family get-a-way.
The Lower Yough has over 15 rapids, many of them class 3 and two of them a class four. It is challenging enough to not bore a veteran rafter, however it isn't hard enough to over-intimidate a first time rafter.
When rafting the Lower Yough, you have a few options. There are four outfitters in the town of Ohiopyle, all of which would be happy to place you a guided tour of the Lower Yough. If you have not been rafting before, this is your best option. If you have been down the Lower Yough many times, you may consider renting a raft or inflatable kayak from one of the outfitters. When you do this, you are always responsible for running yout own shuttle to the end of the river. Also keep in mind, when you are renting equipment you will not have a guide with you. This means you are responsible for your own safety. Please do not rent your own equipment and go it alone unless you are an experienced rafter.
